Max Magazine is a super-awesome responsive wordpress theme best suited for newspaper or magazine websites. ok, thats happening because some of your posts have thumbnails while some dont, and its setting the height to the minimum. You can change this. Open style.css file and look for #carousel .carousel-posts li around line 752, and set the minimum width there, eg. min-height: 200px;

Hey Charles, this is caused by the jQuery script masonry.min.js, which is used to re-arrange the divs in sidebar when viewing in tablet devices. You can simply remove this script, it wont make much difference (only difference would be that there could be some empty space between sidebar elements, when viewing the site on the tablet devices). Here’s how to deactivate this: open functions.php file, look for this line wp_enqueue_script(‘masonry… around line 248 and simply comment or remove it. Then look for following code in js/custom.js file and comment it or remove it:
jQuery(‘#sidebar’).masonry({
itemSelector: ‘.widget’
});

Do not make any changes in the code. If you have, then try to download new theme again. Then go to add new post page. And see the right column of the page. There you will see: Categories, tags and below that you will see, ‘Featured image’ -> Click on ‘Set featured image’. A new popup window should appear, which says, ‘set featured image’ -> From computer. Click on ‘Select files’ and select an image from your PC. Once its uploaded, on the same window you will see ‘Use as featured image’ just next to the ‘Insert into Post’ button. Click there and thats it. Now if its still not clear or you are facing problem, send me screenshots of each step to me by email (info{at}gazpo.com) and I will try to see.

Don’t make any changes in the code for the menu. It just shows the default menu if you havn’t set your own menu. You can create your own menu from the dashboard -> menus, and select it, then it will show it. And yes, for the changes in css, its better to create child theme.

I saw your comment above ‘got it’, so I thought you already made it work. The right side grayed area is ad space, where you can place 468px ad. You can put the html code in the theme options and ad will display there, or you can remove the default code from theme options to remove that.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask, and if you wish to use some other theme, that’s your choice.

I’ve created many child themes but what I am doing is not working when I try to make one for Max. The reference you have in the Max style.css http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes says that a child theme only requires a properly constructive style.css. But when I upload my basic child theme I get the “Broken Themes” error on the Themes page (see at bottom). The only template that removes this error is index.php but then the active child theme gets the following error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function max_magazine_get_option() in /home/name/public_html/sitename.com/site/wp-content/themes/_max-child/index.php on line 26

Hey Trishah. I’ve just tested everything (again), and it should be working as mentioned in the codex link. Make sure have following files structure for the max-magazine theme :
themes -> max-magazine -> style.css (and rest of the theme files).
And for the child theme, the structure should be:
themes->whatever-childtheme-name->style.css.
You dont need index.php file in the child theme, just make sure that you are refering to the parent theme correctly (ie. Template: max-magazine), its case sensitive.

Hey Darren, You need to replace the logo with yours. You can specify the logo path in the theme options page.

Don’t worry, you are not bothering. Open the style.css file and look for a:link around line# 119. It has color: #4581B9; change the color there. Also change the colors for a:visited, a:active and a:hover.

Thats because of paragraphs. You can use some debugging tool eg. Firebug to see which element is in that empty space, and then change the style for that.

Hey David. Its simple, when you go to create a new post/edit post page, you can see an option to ‘add a featured image’ for the post on the right column. Once you add the featured image, it will automatically appear in the slider and other featured categories. You can also search on internet on how to add a featured image to the post. Hope it helps.

I tried to change the size of the slider images in the CSS. The images are all unattractively disfigured because of the 630×300 resolutoin.

Any change here doesn’t change anything:

You can add an additional image size in the theme, then it will crop your images to fit best in the slider. Please see the previous comments on this page and also on silver orchid theme. It has been discussed a few times on how to add an additional size in the theme.

But which CSS style property specifically? I have inspected the elements painstakingly with Chrome Element Inspector and with Firebug, and I have not been able to find the problem. I have tweaked dozens of CSS properties, to no avail. The SilverOrchid theme doesn’t have this problem, so I don’t understand what is causing it in the Max theme. I want to stay with the Max theme, since it works better for our site, and I would love to make a donation, but we need to fix this image wrapping problem first.

Just remove the overflow:hidden property from the paragraph inside the post-entry. For that, look for this in style.css file: #content .post .post-entry p and remove the overflow:hidden. It will work then.

I am really excited, I started my page today with your theme and I really like it. I am having a problem with picture sizes. I adjusted a pic for the front top slider to 630x300px and love it, but them the second carousel and the feature picture for the post that is pulling are improperly showing as the sizes are more square, so it is centering and cutting that feature image that as I previously said is rectangular 630×300. Any ideas in how to fix those problems?

This is regarding the Featured Image (for the Slider and Carousel) functionality. I am able to add to the slider without problems, but when I try to unfeature an image, the carousel would be messed up. If I set the image back as featured image, the carousel would be fixed. You should remove the image completely. When you unset the featured image, the wordpress keep it in the gallery, so you should remove from the gallery as well.

If you wont have the post image, slider wont show it, what else you want? You can either set a kind of default image for the slider or you can show only the posts which have featured images. You can do both by editing the includes/slider.php file.

This is a really pretty theme and am still playing around with whether or not I will permanently use it but need some help in deciding if I should after I try to customize it a bit.

1. Is there anyway to have separate (custom) sidebars, one for the homepage and one for individual blog posts? I have many things that I would love on the homepage but would be repetitive on posts, vice versa.

2. Is anyone else having trouble with Adsense or crawler errors with this theme? Adsense was working perfectly fine on this domain with several previous themes. Now I just receive pale yellow boxes…

3. I’m also finding errors in how the text wraps around images in posts. I now have large amounts of white space which is fairly unattractive. Any ideas?

You can edit the header.php file and place the #nav div outside the header. It will place the menu outside the header. You can set its background color in style.css file.

Thanks for the response. I was able to move the nav bar outside the header but changing the color still isn’t working. I feel like I’m missing something really obvious here…

I’ve messed with the CSS and added “background-color:#000;” under all the #nav headings and the only one that makes a difference is “#nav ul li a” which only makes that particular link that color and not the entire bar/blank space area. For some reason the rest of the bar stays the body background color, or the header color if i leave it in the header area.

I’m sure there is something easy I am missing here — thanks for your time and help.

Its a bit tricky to change the menu background because it has multilevels..Just try to look at the complete CSS code of the #nav and try colors. Also try using some tool like firebug to check the elements etc.

I wanted to add four carousels in this theme for my four categories defined by me. Although it’s not supported to add more than one category for the carousel I did some code level customizations for the index.php file of the theme. What I did was I created four carousel files named as carousel1,carousel2,etc. and I repeated “get_template_part(‘includes/carousel#’)” method for four times in the index.php Without any problem four carousels were appeared in my site. But later I noticed that they aren’t sliding properly. However if carousels reduced into two those two carousels are working properly. I couldn’t figure out what’s the wrong. Is there any limitations? or Is there any other way to do that? Plz help me.

You’re very close. Now that you have made the php files for each carousel, you just need to configure jQuery code for each of it. Just open js/custom.js file and look for the line starting with: jQuery(“.carousel-posts…
Just copy that code block for each of the carousel. Remember to set the proper class name. If you are using same css class for all of them, you dont need to do that.

Thank you for the reply. I did as you said. But problem is still there. Once I did as you said I can see that the first carousel is slides twice or thrice at a time. The second one is slides twice at a time. third one is normally slides. the fourth one still has the problem which I previously mentioned (It sees like sliding backwards but never changes the three post contents).

Here’s the code I used in the index.php to add four carousels

Hi Sami, Now I am having a real issue that I can’t figure out. I have the site in the right path and decided to create the child site so I was able to make changes. It was not working because it was telling me that I was missing the theme after I created the file in the File Manager and copy the style.css file. Anyway, decided to delete the max-magazine-child file and w/o touching any content of your original file. After I refreshed my site all the Home posts where gone, and I cant figure out how to bring them up. All the Posts are in the site. I deleted the theme from my dashboard and download it again, but nothing have changed.
Please HELP!!! What am I missing? Where the carousel and everything else went?

I figured out a solution. I exported the content, uninstalled WP, installed WP again and imported the content.

Hi, I wonder if you can help…

I’ve found that text wrapping around images left or right aligned doesn’t seem to work without adding a line break at the paragraph. You can see an example here: http://www.kasterborous.com/2012/10/matt-smith-exclusive-interview/ where there is a bit of a chunk of white space beneath the first paragraph.

The problem is, if I break this paragraph up further, the text stops and only continues beneath the image, rather than alongside. Can you tell me why this is and how I might look into fixing it? Thanks!

Hello, I really love the Max Magazine, and it works wonderfully on my mac and on pc’s. But the mobile version of the theme simply won’t display the scandinavian characters æ, ø and å (ÆØÅ). Here is an example:

Den fÃ¸rste cubanske brÃ¸nnen er forsinket. Man snakker nÃ¥ om midten av mai (copied from my ipad).
Den første cubanske brønnen er forsinket. Man snakker nå om midten av mai (copied from my mac).

Now you may not understand what I have written, but these “Ã¸” should be an ø, and this “Ã¥” should display as an å. They are vital characters in my language. The first line above hardly makes any sense, the second does.

I have tested with multiple other themes, but this one -that I really like- is among the few that has these errors. I believe it to be something that is hardwired into the code and must be fixed by the developer.

Or is there something I can do?

Hey Bent, I understand that there are some problems with the foreign characters. I will fix it in the next update. The problem is caused by the php function substr. If you can not wait for the next update, you can open the files in the includes directory and look for the substr and replace it with the mb_substr, it should fix the problem. Its in multiple locations and in multiple files, so you have to check carefully.

Second question– Is it possible to assign a category to a standard HTML item?

In my situation, I have an HTML page serving as a directory of eLearning modules. Since these eLearning modules are not posts, there’s no way for a student to find them via a category filter. Of course, I could create a post for each eLearning module, but then I’d encounter the problem outlined in my other question– I don’t want every eLearning module (nearly 100) to appear on the homepage.

If the theme offered the flexibility to define which category or categories (e.g. “News”) appeared on the homepage, that would solve my problem.

Hi there,

It took me sometime to find this theme but I can see that it definitely has some potential and perfect for my purposes. I figured out how to make a few tweaks because it is obviously not perfect (looking forward to the update) but there are some things that I am having difficulty with.

1 – I fixed a problem with the bunching up of boxes in the sidebar by disabling the jquery function (after reading through the comments on this page) but now I cannot use the very attractive slider and the carousel didn’t seem to work from the start… Any solutions available for this?

2 – Also is it possible to hide the tags from being displayed?

1. LooI’m guessing that the jQuery code is broken. Make sure that you have not removed any js files from the functions.php file (remove only masonry.js file). Also in the custom.js file remove the masronry code carefully.

Hi Sami – I installed your Max Magazine theme in my blog to see how it worked and the Featured Category headings were overlapping the text blelow. Is this because there were no featured images? Just one question, when i am trying to view in my iphone, the table was shown incomplete, can i disable the mobile view and just view in normal mode? That’s a space for a banner advert (468 x 60). Create one with those dimensions in Google Adsense or Amazon Affiliates and copy the code. Then go to Appearance, Theme Options and paste the text into the ‘Header ad code’ box.

Thanks for making it so easy to use a background image in this theme. Is it possible to embed a link in that background image? This would make it so much easier to monetise the site with sponsorship. If you can tell me how to do it by editing the CSS (you’ll have to really point it out to me, which line and which page, as I’m a newbie) I’ll make a small donation. What would be really handy is if you decide to build the ability to add a link into the Background page. You could add a URL box in the Display Options area. I’d be happy to donate again if you did that in a future update.

thatfilmthing, there’s no CSS necessary here. It’s a three-step process from your site’s WP Dashboard.

1. Upload the image you want to use as your “ad” via the Media–>Add New button.

2. Once your picture has uploaded, click on Edit. On the far right, you’ll see the File URL. Copy the entire URL, you’ll need this for step three.

3. On your dashboard, go to Appearance–>Theme Options–>Ads and Custom Styles. In the Header Ad Code section, insert the following code without the outer quotes:

“Sponsored By”

“”

Steve, you can simply edit each image in Media->Library to scale to the exact dimensions you want. This will also help with your Google PageSpeed. it’s called serving scaled images.

I had the same issue. In the carousel, use images that are 2times width to height – around 400 wide by 200 tall. The carousel stretches or reduces the image but not proportionately, so if your original is not a 2×1 aspect ratio – you get distortion. I haven’d figured out the slider ratios yet.

Great Theme! I have been playing around with it on a non-live site. I have a question. If I change the background to the color I want, the background color shows in between the header and the body, which do not like, instead of just surrounding it. My carousel isn’t displaying on my website like it is on the theme demo. if I set a featured image it only shows the image not the title, comments, tags, and snippet like in the demo. almost as if the height is too small or something. Any help?

Hi Gazpo crew! The max magazine theme is great, thanks for creating it.
On the homepage of www[.]giad[.]biz I’m using pagination for the recent articles. Clicking one of the pagenumbers throws a 404-error. I tried adjusting the WordPress pagination function, but I don’t seem to be able to fix this behavior. Can you please point me in the right direction?

Kamron, in your ftp navigate to wp-content/themes/max-magazine/footer.php. Edit the section titled div class=”footer-info” to say what you want. Just be careful to only replace the text portion, not any of the code. Upload back to your server, and refresh your page. Voila!

Hi Sami.

I have created catagories and enabled the slider theme thingies but when I go to choose the catagories all that comes up is uncatagorised to choose fromin hte dropdown menu instead of all the catagories. Also I cannot work out how to load the big photo where the little spinny things appears.

I’m having trouble with my side widgets and footer widgets. The text boxes are not displaying ads on other devices but are on my machine. Cleared cache and everything. The footer widgets are only displaying 3 out of the 4. Sometimes all 4 widgets are displayed until the page is refreshed or you go to another page….I posted these 2 issues on the WordPress forum but have had no responses…

excellent theme! It’s been a lifesaver! One question: I’m trying to repeat the primary navigation at the bottom of the website. I tried copying the code from the header into the footer, which works… until I look at the mobile version of the menu. It will create two menu boxes, and each one repeats the navigation twice when I click “Navigate to…”.

Any ideas?

Kayley, create another menu in Appearance–>Menus. You can also use your main nav menu.

Then in Appearance–>Widgets, drag the ‘Custom Menu’ widget into the Footer Area, and choose the menu you want to use.

Thanks for the advice, Paul. This doesn’t exactly achieve what I’m trying to do. I want to replicate the style and functionality of the top navigation bar at the bottom of my website. This also means that when you look at the mobile version, a second navigation box appears at the bottom of the page.

Some things I’ve already tried:
-Copying the nav div from the header into the footer, as is. This works fine until the mobile version.
-Repeating the step above and attempting to hide the footer nav box from appearing (didn’t work).

-Copy-and-pasting all nav styles into my child theme’s css and renaming the id “footer-nav”. While this looks the same as the header, the dropdown fuctionality doesn’t work and it completely disappears on the mobile version.

I just installed this theme so it’s brand new to me. As I’m getting the page set up, can I can’t get rid of the MAX site name at the top. I thought I would be able to do it under “Customize” but it won’t change.

But there are a few things I’d like info about.

it doesnt show the author info if the author’s bio is empty. you can edit this out in single.php

For those who wonder how to fix this, I had to edit the file called single.php in the themes directory. I inserted the command the_author(); where I wanted the author to appear.
